12 killed in twin attacks on IS positions in eastern Syria

DAMASCUS, March 8 (Xinhua) — Unknown armed groups killed at least 12 Islamic State (IS) militants in twin attacks on positions of IS in eastern Syria, a monitoring group reported Sunday.

The attacks were carried out simultaneously on IS positions in the city of Mayadeen in eastern province of Deir al-Zour, close to Iraqi borders, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The official Syrian media didn’t comment on the incident, but previous reports confirmed that local “resistance” groups were formed in Deir al-Zour to carry out guerrilla attacks against the IS positions in the oil-rich province.

The IS has captured large swathes of Deir al-Zour in recent months amid ongoing battles with government troops which are entrenched in parts of the city.

A day earlier, activists reported several Syrian airstrikes against the IS positions in Mayadeen city.
