Extreme cold kills 11 Syrians in a week

Some 11 people died in areas held by the Syrian opposition forces, including seven children in the last week due to extreme weather conditions and snowstorms that hit several countries in the Middle East, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported yesterday.

The snowstorm that hit large swathes of Syria caused the death of six people, the Observatory said after reporting the death of a child and a man on Sunday.

The organisation pointed that the victims included a child from the town of Abu Kamal, a man from the city of Al-Mayadeen in the Deir Ez-Zor suburbs, two-day old twin girls from Al-Firdaws neighbourhood in the city of Aleppo, a man from Al-Maghayer neighbourhood in the city of Aleppo, a child from Beit Sahem in Damascus, and a child in the suburbs of Daraa.

According to the Observatory, the victims died as a result of the extremely low temperatures and acute shortage of heating.

It reported the deaths of five other people between Wednesday and Sunday, for the same reason.

The areas under the control of opposition fighters suffer from a significant shortage of fuel, heating and medicine.

The snowstorm caused deaths among Syrian refugees residing in neighbouring countries, including two in Lebanon on Wednesday.
