BRUSSELS: Belgian police have arrested four people during nationwide raids aimed at smashing groups that recruit jihadis to fight in Syria, prosecutors said Friday.

Police carried out 22 raids in areas across Belgium but found no weapons or ammunition, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The prosecutor said the raids were not related to an operation earlier this month aimed at foiling a plot to kill police officers, in which two suspected militants were shot dead.

“This file concerns people who want to go to Syria and fight there,” the prosecutor’s office said, adding that they wanted “to presumably join a terrorist group.”

“The investigation concentrates on the organization who recruits those persons and sends them to Syria,” it said.

A judge will decide later Friday whether to keep the four arrested men in custody.
