At least 20 Syrian regime troops were killed Saturday (May 31st) when Islamist opposition fighters planted explosives in a tunnel under an army position in Aleppo, AFP reported.

Islamist fighters “detonated a tunnel near the Zahrawi market in the Old City of Aleppo, killing at least 20 army soldiers and pro-regime militiamen”, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Fighting broke out after the explosion, and at least one opposition fighter was killed, the Observatory said.

The Islamic Front claimed the attack.

The group has frequently used tunnels to plant explosives beneath army positions, especially in Aleppo and neighbouring Idlib provinces.
